چکیده

We consider the problem of determining the maximum number of moves required to sort a permutation of [n] using cut-and-paste operations, in which a segment is cut out and then pasted into the remaining string, possibly reversed. We give short proofs that every permutation of [n] can be transformed to the identity in at most ⌊2n/3⌋ such moves and that some permutations require at least ⌊n/2⌋ moves.

Some Pitfalls of LK-to-LJ Translations and How to Avoid Them

In this paper, we investigate translations from a classical cut-free sequent calculus LK into an intuitionistic cut-free sequent calculus LJ. Translations known from the literature rest on permutations of inferences in classical proofs. We show that, for some classes of rst-order formulae, all minimal LJ-proofs are non-elementary but there exist short LK-proofs of the same formula. Similar resu...

A Simpler 1.5-Approximation Algorithm for Sorting by Transpositions

A common approach in comparative genomics is to compare the order of appearance of orthologous genes in different genomes. Genomes are represented by permutations, where each element stands for a gene. Circular genomes (such as bacterial and mitochondrial genomes) are represented by circular permutations. The basic task is, given two permutations, to find a shortest sequence of rearrangement op...

On the combinatorics of suffix arrays

We prove several combinatorial properties of suffix arrays, including a characterization of suffix arrays through a bijection with a certain well-defined class of permutations. Our approach is based on the characterization of Burrows-Wheeler arrays given in [1], that we apply by reducing suffix sorting to cyclic shift sorting through the use of an additional sentinel symbol. We show that the ch...

On Sorting Permutations by Double-Cut-and-Joins

The problem of sorting permutations by double-cut-and-joins (SBD) arises when we perform the double-cut-and-join (DCJ) operations on pairs of unichromosomal genomes without the gene strandedness information. In this paper we show it is a NP-hard problem by reduction to an equivalent previously-known problem, called breakpoint graph decomposition (BGD), which calls for a largest collection of ed...

Virtual Memory for Data-Parallel Computing

This thesis explores several issues that arise in the design and implementation of virtual-memory systems for data-parallel computing. Chapter 1 presents an overview of virtual memory for data-parallel computing. The chapter lists some applications that may benefit from large address spaces in a data-parallel model. It also describes the view of virtual memory for data-parallel computing used i...
